Gruen Transfer

Victor Grünbaum or Gruen (1903-1980) was an architect born and brought up in Vienna. When Germany annexed Austria in 1938, he emigrated to the United States. Arriving in New York he changed his name to Gruen from Grünbaum and started to work as a draftsman. He designed the first suburban open-air shopping facility called Northland Mall near Detroit in 1954. After the success of the first project, he designed his best known work for the owners of Dayton Department stores, the 800,000-square-foot (74,000 m2) Southdale Mall, the first enclosed shopping mall in the country in Edina, Minnesota. Opening in 1956, Southdale was meant as the kernel of a full-fledged community. The mall was commercially successful, but the original design was never fully realized, as the intended apartment buildings, schools, medical facilities, park and lake were not built. Because he invented the modern mall, Malcolm Gladwell, writing in The New Yorker, suggested that "Victor Gruen may well have been the most influential architect of the twentieth century."

“Greun Transfer”, named after Victor Gruen, describes that split second when the mall's intentionally confusing layout makes your eyes glaze and your jaws slacken... the moment when you forget what you came for and become impulse buyers.

In other words, the Gruen transfer is the moment when consumers respond to "scripted disorientation" cues in the environment. Spatial awareness of their surroundings plays a key role, as does the surrounding sound and music. The effect of the transfer is marked by a slower walking pace.

“The Gruen Transfer” is an Australian television program focusing on advertising, which debuted on ABC1 on 28 May 2008 and has run for three series. The program is hosted by Wil Anderson with a panel of advertising industry experts.

The show's debut episode drew an audience of nearly 1.3 million, the highest debut for an entertainment program in the ABC's history. The concept has been sold to TV production companies in the UK, Denmark, France, Italy, Portugal, South Africa and Spain. Lets see when it is taken up by the Network18 group.

Here is an example of the Ads shot for this program.

"Megamind" on Farmville

Saw this interesting advertisement of "Megamind" a new movie on Farmville....

Innovative...

While a very simple link on your Farmville page leads to this Megamind page, it simply creates the much needed awareness just before the launch of the movie... shows how important Internet and the games are, to drive audiences

eBooks versus printed versions

Two interesting stories in ET today….

The first talking about how kindle sold more ebooks than Hard bounds… well hard bound do sell far lesser than paper back versions… hence don’t know how much will it do to displace conventional books.. also kindle is running a current scheme to promote ebooks which is highlighted in the next story on Penguin introducing ebooks on ipad with Video… and here they are doing it because they are not happy with Kindles strategy of discounting ebooks, besides the ipad ebook gives an opportunity to increase profitability. I wonder what the sales would have been if a similar promotion had been on hard bound books..

My take… print is here to stay… ebooks will bring in a lot more convenience for mobile readers and a lot more profitability to publishers… ebooks will though change certain reading habits (probably decrease their power to dream) of the new generation with the interactivity angle built into the books now… may be now while reading your novel on an iPad you probably don’t need to imagine the the city or the street or the room described by the author, you can either see the image, video or simply click on the link to see what the place looks like… hmmmm… takes the punch out of the novel… better watch a movie…

AVATAR - Raising the bar

At the last minute I managed to lay hands on the Premiere passes for one of the most awaited movies this year - Avatar. Having reached the star studded gliteratti on time, only thing on my mind was to screening of the movie. A long wait finally paid off with a satidfying experience of mind boggling special effects, gret art direction and the genius of James Cameron. He has raised the bar, by far, from any other movie launched this year.

The Brand called SRK

Recently Dish TV unveiled a new logo. a new TV campaign and above all a new SRK... Revolving around the theme of "bringing home happiness" (Ghar Ayee Zindagi) the ad revolves around a much quieter SRK who is playing a role of a father or grandfather as a silent spectator to DISH TV spreading its magic. SRK has been a a sales man, he has been selling every brand he has endorsed, in every forum possible. Suddenly making him sit quite as just another element of the campaign is a gross under utilisation of his talent - selling.

I would vote this ad as an ITDW - Idea that didn't work....

The ZooZoo Effect

The whole owrlds talking about it. People in India are totally enamoured with it. It was the fastest growing community n the web in recenttimes. then how could I have stayed behind in not writing about it....
The simply lovable eggish characters seem to come straight out of comic books and have taken the world by surprise. Even more surprising is its execution where Vendanta, the agency has created the animation effect using life size monochrome stages/sets/backdrops and small people and children from South Africa and rendering the magic by shooting at a lower frame rate to create that surreal animation effect... stupendous is the effort, to be described...
The execution apart, the concept itself has taken people by surpise and are smitten over these new characters. Initially a phase of intrigue, then surprise and then being head-over-heels in love with the characters. thats the way way people swooned over it... Like the Hutch Pug, vendanata managed to create the magic all over again with the ZooZoo characters and I would give full 10 marks to this idea and it has worked...
